Book Cover Design: Mythologies

Book Cover Design : Mythologies

I choose to redesign the book ‘Mythologies by Roland Barthes. Mythologies is a book published in 1957. It is a collection of essays taken from Les Lettres nouvelles, examining the tendency of contemporary social value systems to create modern myths. I read this book when I was in college in my Mythology class. It was written in 1954 but the massage in the book still practical in 2012. The book talked about myth and symbolic behind things surround us, such as toys, magazines, books, or advertisement. Barthes unlocked the process and explained the meaning of those things for us to question and look at those in the new way.

For the redesigning cover of the book, I designed the cover for Penguin publishing. As Penguin cover design, they are known as clean style, well use of negative space, and good selection of typography. I wanted to show the real examples from chapters in the book. I choose objects from the book and put them in the square box. I also stack them together in the big square box again to repeat the shape. However, the top of each object was point into the different direction to make them interesting. For typography choice, I use Didot typeface. It is a clean, formal, with a touch of modern feeling in the thin line. For color, I want to try to use the color of 2012, tangerine tango,to make it up to date with the color trend.
